On 17 September 2024, the Federal Patent Court, in collaboration with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), hosted a symposium titled 'Five years of MaMoG - present developments in trade mark law', which gathered lawyers, judges, trade mark examiners and trade mark industry experts.
After introductory remarks by the heads of the Court and the Office, the DPMA highlighted the changes that have occurred since the entry into force of the Trade Mark Law. Among other topics, the handling of certification trademarks, the effects of new trademark forms, and the changed representation options on trademark procedures came under examination. Furthermore, the new design of the invalidity and revocation proceedings was presented and a panel discussion chaired by the President of the Federal Patent Court explored these changes and their implications. Finally, an introduction to the European convergence projects, aiming to standardise examination practices for trade mark applications across Europe, broadened the participants' perspective beyond Germany. The day concluded with a presentation on the Federal Patent Court's current case law in the field of trademark law.
On 12 and 13 September 2023, the Federal Patent Court, together with the Federal Association of German Patent Attorneys and the Bavarian State Ministry of Justice, organised a symposium on the topic of "Two years of the Second Patent Law Modernisation Act - expectations fulfilled?" At the symposium, the experts analysed the current situation, discussed it, provided impetus and pointed out perspectives.
In previous years, the Federal Patent Court has organised international symposiums on current issues of patent and trade mark law every two years, at which experts discussed various topics from the field of intellectual property rights, such as the interpretation of patent claims (2016) or the risks and side effects of the European Union trade mark in domestic law (2018).
The President traditionally organises a summer reception at the Federal Patent Court. The receptions of the Federal Patent Court, which previously took place at the beginning of each year, have established themselves as a permanent fixture in the calendar of numerous institutions and organisations in the field of industrial property rights. We also regularly welcome members of the courts and consular representatives based in Munich to these events.
Since 2007, the Federal Patent Court has participated in national Girls’ Day, which takes place in April every year. Aimed exclusively at female students, Girls’ Day is the largest career orientation project of its kind. On this day every year, the Federal Patent Court opens its doors to high school students in grades 8 to 10. As part of the programme, the participants are introduced to the profession of technical judge at the Federal Patent Court, with the aim of inspiring them to pursue a career in the scientific or technical sector.
